Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
